Where Does Spirituality Fit In Your Health Improvement?
Have you ever wondered how to deepen your purpose, and the meaning behind caring for your body with proper nutrition and fitness? Have you ever felt there was a part of you that was missing? Have you wondered how you can find more enjoyment in everything you do?
If so, you’re not alone. Feelings of emptiness, lack of motivation, and overall ‘blah’ seem to be a constant companion to so many who I am blessed to interact with at Body Buddies.
In this blog post, I would like to consider together the benefits of bringing more spirituality into everything we do–from nutrition and fitness to our every day work and hobbies. I believe that a careful analysis of your life and the effort to incorporate my challenge at the end of this post will be the first domino in a chain reaction of positive events in your life.
I can say this because I experience it time and time again in my life, and watch this in many others’ lives as well.
What Is Hope Anyway?
When you’re feeling that you can’t get motivated, focused, or follow through on anything in your life (especially your health and wellness goals), I like to do some deeper analysis with you.
What do you believe about the outcome of your life?
Where do you see yourself in 1 year? 5 years? 10 years?
After going through this process with you, I might find that you don’t have much hope for your future. Things are really tough, and you can’t seem to see a future beyond right now. This makes perfect sense then as to why you’re not producing behavior that would change the outcome for you. You don’t see a point to.
Please keep in mind, this process all happens below the surface–the subconscious mind is what it’s called. Here is the good news: even if we can’t find that you have Hope for the future NOW, through coaching, we usually can find WHY that hope has been extinguished.
We then are able to focus on this new belief that was formed and re-engineer it backwards. We work to eliminate the thoughts that led to this new belief that you have no future.
Your mind is powerful, and together in a coaching relationship, we re-calibrate the way you think to make a significant change moving forward. There IS hope for you–we just need to figure out how to connect your mind to the hope again.
Where To Start
It all begins with 5 minutes per day. With many of the Sunday School classes, dance class settings, or motivational speaking I do, I encourage the 5-5-5.* But with you, let’s start with just 5 minutes per day. For 5 minutes per day, I would like you to connect with your higher power. This could be through prayer, meditation, journaling, listening to music, or breathing.
Whatever it is, focus on connecting. Calm your mind. Turn inward. Turn upward. Ask. Seek. Believe. Ponder.
The effectiveness of this action will be as effective as you make it–and it requires a quiet mind. This is so key!
If you struggle with quieting the inner chatter, watch this video, or turn on YouTube and type in “guided meditation for spirituality” and you’ll be amazed at how helpful this is. I also love the audio version of The Four Agreements— near the end of the book, there is a prayers section that helps me articulate a connection with my Higher Power and what I feel He can help me achieve outside of my own self.
* 5 minutes study + 5 minutes journal + 5 minutes pray/meditate
Whether you’re religious (check out the religion that jives with me and I love so much here) or not, spirituality can be the energy current on which you operate. Spirituality is a true love and depth of acceptance that light and darkness, energy and impact have an undeniable role in your life. Spirituality is often intangible, while other times its presence is so strong you feel blinded by its power and reality.
