Shannon Beats Smoking, Drinking. . . AND Her Food Coping Triggers

Dear Body Buds,

I remember having my first real conversation with Shannon after she won one of my 8-week Challenges–it was one that really struck me with the beauty of CHANGE.

She told me her story of food addiction after needing a new coping mechanism after quitting smoking and drinking. I was amazed to hear of her resilience as she continued learning, working, trying, and achieving!

Here is a small part of her story that I am sure you will find as inspiring as I have:

“3 years ago I was a cigarette smoker and an alcoholic. My family and I started going to church and I quit those things along with coffee, all at once cold turkey. To help with all of the different cravings I was experiencing, I turned to food.

I allowed myself to indulge in anything and everything. I ended up getting heavier than when I was pregnant with my daughter 11 years ago.


After a couple of years, I was still eating as much as I wanted and still gaining weight. I had been following Body Buddies on Facebook for at least a year and liked what I read and heard, but never applied it. I finally decided to sign up for an 8-week challenge which absolutely changed my life. I learned so much after reading the Power Foods Lifestyle book! I learned so much about my body and foods that I’ve always thought were healthy actually aren’t!

Grocery shopping was the hardest part to learn for me. ( it’s super easy now, but it took some time). I had no idea where all of these different foods were; I had no clue what isle they were in because I’ve never even heard of some of them! The first time I went grocery shopping with the Power Foods Lifestyle took me about two hours! I felt pretty overwhelmed and a little embarrassed to be buying “healthy” foods because I was so fluffy. I worried what other shoppers and the cashier thought of this chubby girl buying a bunch of veggies.

Now, I could care less what they think and I don’t even worry about it. Food prep wasn’t as hard as grocery shopping for me, and it made me feel like I was taking control.

The first day of eating was extraordinary–I was already feeling more energetic and happy! The first couple weeks I lost quite a bit because I was so bloated before. Indulgence meals are still really hard for me, but getting easier. At first I would try to eat everything that I had denied myself all week and then have a hard time getting back on track.

I have been living the Power Foods Lifestyle now (most of the time) for 7 months! I feel great, I feel younger, I feel more confident, prettier, and happier! I have tons of slip-ups, but it’s easier for me now to get right back on the horse! I still have a really long ways to go but I am enjoying the challenges now and enjoying my body and my life.”

She has learned that it’s not about perfection; it’s about continuing to keep going! She learns, she applies, and as a member of the Body Buddies family she is able to have the resources to keep her going and learning!
